Course Description
Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common in parking garages, parking structures, and enclosed facilities, creating new challenges for fire departments and first responders. Electric Vehicle Fires in Parking Structures is an advanced, hands-on training program designed to prepare firefighters for the unique hazards associated with electric vehicle incidents in confined and complex environments.
This course examines the challenges of locating, accessing, controlling, and monitoring electric vehicle fires when they occur in parking structures. Students will explore how building construction, limited access, low ceilings, ventilation, vehicle density, and the presence of high-voltage battery systems can significantly affect fireground operations.
The course focuses on real-world firefighter tactics and decision-making, including incident size-up, risk assessment, water application, battery cooling, fire attack, ventilation considerations, vehicle stabilization, and post-fire monitoring.
